“…Who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel”, (2 Timothy1.10b).
To talk about the works the Lord Jesus did is not easy to do. He is the person of the Trinity who created all things, visible and invisible (Colossians 1:16). Without Him, nothing was made that was made (John 1:3). Besides, when He came to this world, He accomplished several miracles. Which one is the greatest? The multiplication of the bread and fish or the transformation of water into wine? The healing of the blind man or Lazarus’ resurrection after being buried for 4 days? To walk on water or deliver the demon possessed man from the Gergesenes territory? Without a doubt, it is impossible for men to point out which of His works can be considered the greatest. But the biblical declaration above brings us a great revelation of what probably is the most important of all His accomplishments.
He abolished death- When Adam sinned he gave the devil dominion over all human race. Adam transferred to God´s archenemy all the authority the Lord had granted him. Adam was warned that if he ate the fruit from a certain tree the price to be paid would be too high: death. Once man disobeyed the Word of God, man found himself slave to the enemy: Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? (Romans 6:16). Thus sin entered the world and with it, death – Satan´s nature came to all people.
After the fall of man, the law of sin and death became the principle which governed mankind, thus, all types of suffering arouse. From then on, every seed of man that was born on Earth was automatically a servant of the devil, who ruled this world all by himself.
With the coming o four beloved Savior, this law was abolished. He did the same thing Princess Isabel did, on may 13th, 1888, when she sanctioned the Golden Law (Lei Áurea). With that law, she declared freedom to all slaves, who from that day on, took hold of their new stand as free citizens, refusing by all means, to submit to slavery. Those people acquired the same rights all other Brazilian citizens had, for they became free citizens forever.
Perhaps some people continued acting as slaves for some time because they did not have the information of what was done on their behalf. But when the day comes when they are given such good news, they will have the right to stop their work immediately and take hold of their new position as redeemed people, therefore, free.
Today we have to travel the land from North to South and tell all people that captivity is over. We do not have to submit ourselves anymore to any of the enemy´s whim. He does not rule over us any longer. The Lord Jesus abolished that law, than captivity called death. We are totally free!
