05/20/2014 - THE SECRET IS WALKING IN THE LIGHT

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (I John 1:7).

Walking in the light is to live according to the revelation of God’s Word. Light is the understanding we receive from our Father when our minds grasp the real meaning of the biblical passages by reading or listening to the preaching of the Word. It is the revelation of the Scriptures that the Holy Spirit gives us and it is the enlightenment that causes faith to arise in our hearts. In evangelical parlance, we say that the Word strikes the eye. For better understanding, we will study the four parts of the verse quoted separately.

If we walk in the light – This passage establishes the condition according to which if we do not walk in the light, the promise contained in this verse will have no value. Therefore one must be in communion with it. For those who are of the Lord it does not sound like something compulsory, an obligation, but rather as a wonderful guidance given by God. In fact, the secret to success is to follow all the guidelines He gives us through His Word.

No matter whether the Light is bright or dim; we have been instructed to walk in it. Accepting guidance and acting upon the Word proves the confidence we have in Him. This is how the Lord directs us: He shows us the light and all we have to do is take possession of the revelation, trust in the Him and have Him as our goal.

The Lord Jesus revealed the secret to being successful: You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me (John 5:39). The Lord reveals Himself through the Scriptures and He knows what the Father wanted Him to speak to me: “Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak” (John 12:50b). Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things” (John 8:28). The Lord still uses the same method today. He gives revelation – the Light. If we are wise as the Lord Jesus, we will do the same works He does because we will have the same tools.

As He is in the Light – Our God is in the light, He is in that little promise that reveals itself or in the great understanding of the Word we obtain. By using it in the fight against evil, we are allowing God to enter the battle and overcome the evil force that opposes us.

It is through this understanding that the Lord will come to our rescue; It is the Light that assures us of victory. It is in the revelation of His Word that He becomes the refuge and strength – very present help in time of trouble.

Light is the only place where we will find Him and from where He will manifest Himself as the invincible God. We need to always be in the Light, walking in it and never despising it because it is in the light that we find God. Moving away from any understanding of our Father’s Word is to allow the enemy to act in our lives.

We have fellowship with one another – The world lies under the sway of the wicked one. Mankind is in darkness. The revelation of the Word is the Light that makes us emerge before God; it sets us apart and puts us in the spot. When we receive it and walk in it, we have fellowship with one another. In order to better understand it, let’s examine the following situation: a child of God consecrates himself and receives a blessing from the Lord; another one, with more difficulties, goes up to that brother and asks him to pray for him and to bless him. The former prays with confidence; however, he does not achieve his goal because the latter is not in the Light. So they will not be able to have fellowship with one another.

Walking in the Light removes all obstacles which might prevent us from using the power that the Lord has given us to accomplish His work. If we do not walk in the light, we will not be able to establish a bond among us. Let us take the internet, the World Wide Web, as another example: Let’s say I have a computer that is connected to that network. In this case, we can maintain communication and stay connected as long as we want, exchanging information. However, if we have computers and a desire to communicate but only one of us is connected to the Internet, our “communion” will never take place. One of us will not be in the “light”.

The blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, cleanses us from all sin – The most important work that the Lord Jesus did in His coming to earth was our salvation. When He died, He defeated the devil, bought us for God, freeing us forever from the satanic bondage. On the cross He redeemed us for a clean, healthy, prosperous, honorable and holy life. However, no man will participate in it without walking in the Light, for He is in the Light.

By walking in the Light, the Christian will not have lustful desires or interest in shady businesses; he will not steal nor will he be unfaithful, whether in his marriage or any other commitment he undertakes.

If we are in the light, in addition to fellowship with each other, we have the supreme blessing of having the blood of Jesus cleansing us from all sin. With Adam’s fall, sin came into this world bringing death – Satan’s nature. It tainted and defiled us in all forms. However, the great news is: if we meet the conditions laid down by Him, we shall be cleansed from all sin. There will be no stain on our character, personality or in any area of our lives. Therefore, the more we walk in the light, the purer we will be. This is important because the Word says: Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).

Make the decision to walk in the Light because you have everything to gain. Now is the best time for you to become a completely blessed person. The Scriptures tell us: The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light (Romans 13:12)
